The Dalai Lama says in order to have peace in our world, we must first start with ourselves. This is so true. All is energy, vibrating and connecting with other energies. If we are out of balance we attract other forces that are out of balance and if we are positive and thriving we will attract likewise. To maintain a sense of balance and inner peace takes constant effort and practice.
My meditation practice has been steady. I don’t get too hard on myself if I miss a night, but I dedicate myself to sit for at least 15 minutes a night before going to bed (it’s the only free time I get with a little one running around). Beyond that, I do my best to practice ‘doing’ meditation, to stay present throughout the course of the day.
All of this dialogue stems from the fact that I’ve begun teaching my mural painting class titled ‘Painters for Peace’. My students are amazing young artists and we will paint a 30’ mural over the next few months. I’ve been raising funds to make it happen and am working with kids at the Peekskill Youth Bureau. It’s an amazing project and I am very much looking forward to the process.
However, as I’ve never taught before, the other day I was walking Isabella in the park and I was trying to figure out how to begin, how to move forward, what to teach, how to teach.
And, as I struggled to figure it out, I passed a car with a bumper sticker that said simply ‘Teach Peace’. It became clear in that moment. And to teach, one must be…so this is my work now. Being peace, Teaching peace… and then painting a kick ass 30’ mural with some awesome young artists. Soooo looking forward!
